La festa del Gioia, conosciuta anche come la festa dell’Uomo Vivo, è una delle celebrazioni più importanti e sentite di Scicli. Si svolge la Domenica di Pasqua e rappresenta un’esplosione di gioia e devozione per la comunità locale
La festa ha un’energia speciale che abbraccia tutta la città e si sviluppa in diversi momenti che hanno una sacralità spesso “profana”:
- Processione del Venerabile: La giornata inizia con la processione del Venerabile, uno stendardo di seta azzurra portato da giovani che dimostrano la loro forza e vigore. Questa processione attraversa il centro storico e culmina nella Chiesa di Santa Maria La Nova.
- Sollevamento della Statua: All’interno della chiesa, i devoti sollevano la statua del Cristo Risorto, chiamata ‘U Gioia o l’Uomo Vivo, e urlano “Gioia! Gioia! Gioia!”. Questo momento è caratterizzato da un’atmosfera elettrica e piena di emozione.
- Processione dell’Uomo Vivo: La statua viene portata fuori dalla chiesa e inizia una frenetica processione per le strade di Scicli. La statua barcolla e gira su se stessa, accompagnata dalle urla di gioia dei partecipanti. La banda cittadina intona l’Inno di Busacca, creando un’atmosfera festosa e coinvolgente.
- Partecipazione di tutta la Comunità: La festa del Gioia è aperta a tutti, senza regole rigide o confraternite autorizzate a portare la statua. Chiunque può unirsi alla processione e contribuire a questo rito di fede e adorazione.
- Vinicio Capossela e la Festa del Gioia: Capossela è rimasto profondamente colpito dalla passione e dall’energia di questa celebrazione, tanto da dedicare una canzone intitolata “L’Uomo Vivo (Inno al Gioia). La canzone cattura lo spirito della festa, con versi che descrivono l’entusiasmo e la devozione dei partecipanti mentre sollevano e fanno ondeggiare la statua del Cristo Risorto, gridando “Gioia! Gioia! Gioia!”
La festa del Gioia è un’esperienza unica che riflette la forte tradizione e la passione della comunità di Scicli. È un momento di grande partecipazione e celebrazione che attira visitatori da tutto il mondo.

The Feast of Joy, also known as the Feast of the Living Man, is one of Scicli’s most important and heartfelt celebrations. It takes place on Easter Sunday and represents an explosion of joy and devotion for the local community.
The feast has a special energy that embraces the whole town and develops in several moments that have an often ‘profane’ sacredness:
Procession of the Venerable: The day begins with the procession of the Venerable, a blue silk banner carried by young people demonstrating their strength and vigour. This procession passes through the old town and culminates at the Church of Santa Maria La Nova.
Raising of the Statue: Inside the church, devotees lift the statue of the Risen Christ, called ‘U Gioia or the Living Man, and shout ’Gioia! Joy! Joy!’. This moment is characterised by an electric atmosphere full of emotion.
Procession of the Living Man: The statue is carried out of the church and begins a frenzied procession through the streets of Scicli. The statue staggers and turns on itself, accompanied by the shouts of joy of the participants. The town band intones the Busacca anthem, creating a festive and engaging atmosphere.
Participation of the entire community: the Feast of Joy is open to all, with no strict rules or confraternities allowed to carry the statue. Anyone can join the procession and contribute to this rite of faith and adoration.
Vinicio Capossela and the Festa del Gioia: Capossela was deeply impressed by the passion and energy of this celebration, so much so that he dedicated a song to it entitled ‘L’Uomo Vivo (Inno al Gioia). The song captures the spirit of the festival, with verses describing the enthusiasm and devotion of the participants as they lift and sway the statue of the Risen Christ, shouting ‘Gioia! Joy! Joy!’
